Update: I goofed. Fuzztonalists & Tonefreaks are human, tho.
Ron used a Vox Tone Bender (US version) for 'Down on the Street' chords & leads - one of the most aggressive rockers ever recorded. Touted it as a fave feedback fuzz. He preferred Fuzz Faces & Tone Benders mostly, @ least ca. 'The Stooges' & 'Fun House'.

The Univox Superfuzz still IS a blitzbarraging, treble spiker & slicer of a chopper-chord pedal...the midscoop section really does bring out a hi/lo sound that is absolute assault w rhythm chords.

However: you have to take the 2 germanium diodes out of the circuit. (Unless you spent $500 + on a used one on ebay & don't know much about soldering.) In that case, take good care of your demon child, & get someone else to do this. This pedal loses most all of its real edge-power w those diodes are in circuit.

If you do know some basic soldering, tho, just take them out - or just snip their leads. Then, you will know where Live @ Leeds & Won't Get Fooled Again came from..

This book interweaves w Iggy's preceding saga. But it goes into a much more detailed history on the evolution of the Detroit/Ann Arbor rockatorium.

It starts with John Lee Hooker & the earliest R&B groups, cruises heavily through a vibrant, 50's R&B scene, segues to early 60's clubs & teenage rocker hangouts that emerge from these. The sense of legend is brought to life, in the way the reader can both be there, & then get a happily looming premonition of what was to come, as the region's mid - 60's club hangout crowds morph into bigger & bigger ones, amassing like filings drawn together by some Huge Magnet who's gauss quickly & steadily increases. (only way I can put it).

Buzzin' teen hangouts & garage rock clubs escalate into the Grande Ballroom in its role as epicenter, when psychedelia subsequently sweeps Ann Arbor,...along with some great criss-crossing tales of the scene's notables: The Rationals, The Prime Movers, The Dirty Shames, The Underdogs, The Pleasure Seekers (Suzi Quatro & her Sis's' 1st band)...The Stooges, MC5, John Sinclair, Trans-Love Energies, the Detroit Artist's Collective, Gary Grimshaw's magical Grande poster art, Amboy Dukes, SRC, The Up, The Third Power, midwest visitors like Grand Funk & The James Gang, et al.

And, woven Throughout this book, area radio stations, DJs, small club owners, & top 40/45RPM culture in general all get heavy coverage in their role as a crucible out of which the later cultural/political/arts/revo stuff blossomed- names, places, bands, fragments & loose ends no one would ever have known. If you're into that time & place (as it relates to .."all across the USA...") , this is another book for you : a scene sharply distinct from, & as uniquely individual as, but just as telepathically connected to its contemporaries - nationwide - who were up to their own versions of the same thing. The Internet (an inner idea then) was being born within the outer world's Grapevine.....

There is a 7 pg bibliography alone; & discographies. Plus (zipzapyahoo!) an 18 page "where are they now/what happened to them" Epilogue. And one stunner of a deadly-right-on analysis by Carson about the shadowy, distanced, & intangible shifts (read: covert ops, anyone?) that brought this energy to it's demise.

Since I like writing , I found an excerpt (just threw the book open tonight & landed right on it, no kidding) :

"As for the music -- it was everywhere. A seemingy inexhaustible supply of local bands were booked into the teen clubs all over town. CREEM magazine stated that 'Detroit is such a hotbed of rock & roll because the kids are so deeply involved in it', describing the relationship between the bands & their audience as 'nearly symbiotic'. At the same time, the trend of major pop concerts continued. Just seven weeks after the Detroit Pop Festival.....Russ Gibb staged the huge 'First Annual Rock N Roll Revival' @ the Michigan State Fairgrounds, John Sinclair & Trans-Love Energies produced the show. This time, local bands such as the MC5, Stooges, Amboy Dukes, SRC, Frost, Third Power, Rationals, & the Lyman Woodward jazz-soul group shared the stage with national acts including Chuck Berry, Sun Ra, Dr. John, Johnny Winter, and an English band known as the Bonzo Dogs. Other up-&-coming acts on the bill included Savage Grace & Brownsville Station.

....The MC5 were in top form, with Rob Tyner out front, spinning like a 'demented bee.' As the set drew to a close, Fred 'Sonic' Smith, outfitted in silver lame', & Wayne Kramer jumped up & grabbed the overhang of the canopy covering the stage. They hooked their legs to it, & continued to play while hanging upside down, smashing their guitars together at the climax: rock & roll, Detroit style.

In his book FORTUNATE SON, Dave Marsh wrote : 'So powerfully did the MC5's music unite its listeners, that leaving those 1968 & 1969 shows, one literally felt that anything......could come to pass.' "

Writer's note: "Dave..? " (he knows this, but I just want to encourage a resurrection of this kind of positive energy on nothing short of an apocalyptic level in this country ) "You mean ONLY the MC5 in ONLY that ONE place in this country had THAT effect @ that point ??"

For those guitarists who want to get into the Ron Asheton zone (Stooges guitarist, RIP, 2009) ca "No Fun", consider buying a Wattson Electronics Univox Superfuzz reissue. Ron used several early fuzzes,(Vox Tone Bender,& Fuzz Face) but the Univox Superfuzz is the earliest (1968) scooped mids monster that sounds (to me, @ least) like the pedal behind "No Fun's" backdrop.

Look on musictoyz.com for it. Or, if u r ambitious & wealthy, (or dig guitar tones to the point of artistry), find a used Univox Superfuzz on ebay. The Wattson is pretty much the same circuit anyway, w a few enhancing tweaks.

The thingie has a 2 postion midscoop switch, which (IMO) contains a kind of sound reminsicent of the hissing of the Basilisk in Harry Potter. It can be one sinister fuzztone, especially if its EQ ed right.

If you are a DIY pedalmod freak :-) an important manuever is to tweak the simple tail end part of the circuit - a mere 2 resistors & 2 capacitors. I changed a few components on my breadboarded clone , added on a couple of pots, & it becomes (tonewise) the 1000 Midscoop Variations kind of pedal. You can play "No Fun" w any number of variable-but-on tonalities

if you want the UV Superfuzz in a newer kit form, & u have (or would like to) simple soldering skills, try going to www.buildyourownclone.com , & check out their "Leeds Fuzz" kit.

BYOC is great, as they walk u thru building these w relative ease ,even if u r new to the artform.

The UV Superfuzz was also Pete Townsend's mainstay pedal w the early/mid Who, btw.

A full history of Iggy & The Stooges, wrapped within a very detailed package of the interconnecting history of the whole MC5, Grande Ballroom, proto-revolutionary Detroit/Ann Arbor politics, music & scene. This is the book if you are into that combined time, place & band(s). Plus Iggy's (Jim's) full bio , natch, is written into the initial chapters.

excerpts (ca Aug, 1967) :

"....Wayne Kramer, the MC5's leader, who had known Jim from his Prime Movers days, & at one point had considered enticing him into his own band. Hence, when the Psychedelic Stooges decided to unveil the results of their music experiments, it was natural that Sinclair & the ' 5 would be invited. And, as 1967 rolled on, it was decided that All Hallow's Eve, which marked the onset of winter & the time whan spirits walked the earth, was a fortuitous date. The buzz spread around town for several weeks beforehand."

In retrospect, the Stooges debut album was an album out of time, an artifact that was about as admired as an African tribal painting would be at an exhibition of Victorian Pre-Raphaelites. Released the same week as the Woodstock Festival took place.....it was regarded as stone-age & retrogressive. Later, it would be revered as an early punk classic. Both interpretations are equally simplistic. For THE STOOGES today actually sounds fresher & more contemporary than most of the punk, alternative, glam rock, & thrash metal it allegedly spawned. The album took rock music & stripped it down to its barest essentials
: simple 3-chord riffs & unforgettable tunes underpinning deadpan, bored lyrics. No one else had ever attempted to put this kind of anomie to music."

(They should live in Westchester in 2011. They'd have a whole new level of challenge attempting to do that)

i kno i'm gonna be hearing fum literalists here...
this is strictly paraphrasing...

which brings me to the long debated theories on utilitarianism...
and the 'antfarm theory of economics'...
something i SWEAR we learned about in 4th & 5th grade...

and the mostly inert queen as the derivative beneficiary...

whilst the initial pile remains 'locked' apart / separate & distinct...
privileged to the initial investor/ceo/marketprice deteterminant...
at any moment...
these privileged queens in our current system...
are allowed by convenient govt 'market deregulation'...
along with hand-in-hand gaming of corp infrastructure...
to 'choke-off' the sugar which attracted the workers/'individual investors'...
all in the stroke of a few keys in elaborate 'algorithmic trading 'platforms'...
all too often blamed on 'overseas trading fears'...
when it remains inescapable...
that it really is all too often a simple 3 card monte 'scam'...
based upon defrauding the orig utilitarian model of...
